Brick, Scott, Yarbi, Dennis Villarose (MSTA prez), and I made plans to meet in Columbus, NC at noon for lunch, and ride around the area. I mapped out a backroads route from Shelby to Columbus, since slabbing those 40 miles is pure boredom on US74. At first I thought it would be too tedious as I had to string together a LOT of different roads south of the US74 corridor. But once I started riding it, I knew I had made a nice discovery. It was scenic with lots of sweepers and hilly terrain.
Here's what it looked like in Mapsource:
So we all met at Calverts Fine Food in Columbus. The fried flounder was tasty. After lunch Brick led us up Skyuka Rd to the top of White Oak Mtn, about 2000 ft straight up above Columbus.
The views were great and road was non-stop switchbacks. Lotsa fun.
Dennis had to break away at that point and the rest of us rode up NC9 & around Lake Lure and then up Buffalo Shoals Rd. A few miles later Yarbi & I split off and headed back towards home via my "Lake Lure Expressway" thru the middle of nowhere.
It looks kinda like this:
How lucky can you get to live where you can ride in the mountains on Jan. 29??
