Personal Locator Beacon

Unread postby LeeDavis » Sat Sep 23, 2017 11:04 am

Since I know you guys are losing sleep over me going into the backcounty alone on my dual sport I purchased a personal locator beacon, the ACR ResQlink. https://www.acrartex.com/products/catal ... qlink-plb/

It's similar to SPOT but also different. The ResQlink has a more powerful beacon that uses the international SARSAT search and rescue system, run by NOAA in the US. http://www.sarsat.noaa.gov/ Other differences are that it only gets turned on for emergency - no friends following your location via the internet - and in addition to sending GPS coordinates to the satellites it broadcasts a homing signal for rescue to follow. It also doesn't require a paid subscription - you register the device online with NOAA and that's it.

So its single use, then replace at no charge? Not a bad deal.

How often do you think a person would typically need to be rescued?

This gismo looks good to me. If you do some searching on SPOT you may find that there are some very unsatisfied folks out there who had SPOT fail on them when they were in deep do do.
To state the obvious though, don't go riding alone in Bum b-l-a-n-k Egypt.

Both depend on you being able to activate them in the emergency. However with SPOT used as I used it which was ON and leaving a track that could be followed even if I couldn't activate the 911 feature I could be found. Not so the Personal Locator Beacon.
