Locus Map Pro

I still use and like the GPS app OSMand+ on my Nexus 7 tablet but there's another very good android GPS app, Locus Map Pro, with a party trick that was particularly useful for our Colorado trip. I had over 100 Colorado trail segments that I downloaded from Funtreks plus routes I made in Basecamp all loaded into Locus. Locus could display all of them simultaneously and by pressing any route line launch a dialogue box that offered the option to navigate from wherever I was to and along that route or trail. This was the ticket for not knowing exactly what was what but still being able to find our way around to the good stuff.

Here's my Nexus 7 running Locus Maps GPS and displaying some of the trail sections. Green = easy, blue = intermediate, red = difficult.

So on your Nexus you could be completely off a route... touch the route you wanted to ride and it would navigate you over to and on the chosen route?

That is f___ing fantastic!

Yes, and also, if you happen to be at a place that's on the desired route it'll pick up the route at that point and not have to start at the beginning.

OSMand+ : good for when I have a single preplanned GPX route or for when I need as much map detail as possible for exploring. Not so good for off-route recalculations.

Locus Map Pro : Best for handling large amounts of GPX route data and calculations. Not so good for detail.

Google Maps : Now that maps can be downloaded and used offline it's the best for finding specific addresses and points of interest and commerce. No GPX route ability.

IOW, none are perfect so I use them all. Since android does multitasking, I sometimes follow a GPX route on both OSMand+ and Locus Map Pro at the same time. I switch between the two when I prefer some aspect of one over the other.

I bought a second Galaxy S5 (used) and put my old SIM card from my previous phone in it. I figure it is good for 911 in addition to navigation in case I trash my actual phone. I will be playing with Locus Map Pro shortly. I installed it with a Qi wireless / waterproof charger mounted to the X-grip with Velcro, so with all the ports closed, the unit is completely waterproof (unlike a plugged in gadget). Still working on a system for the VFR, which I want under the windscreen.
