Osmand+ Smartphone Navigation

Unread postby LeeDavis » Mon May 11, 2015 6:57 pm

Osmand+ is a smartphone navigation app and like others of it's ilk it couldn't automatically continue a route past a skipped waypoint. It always directed to the skipped waypoint and that's a problem because we often bypass waypoints for various reasons. Thus, these smartphone navigation apps were useless for us...until now! Osmand+ just released v2.0 and it will pick up the route past a skipped waypoint cause I just tried it and it worked! This is a BIG DEAL!...and could be the end for loathsome Garmin.

Osmand+ uses the excellent OpenStreetMaps for calculated routes which can also be loaded into Basecamp/Mapsource for route creation. If anyone else wants to try it here's an OpenStreetMap for the areas we ride on my Google drive. Run the executable and it will install as an available map in Basecamp/Mapsource. Download "OSM Basecamp Mapsource.exe" here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... sp=sharing or you can make your own map at this site: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Basecamp download here: http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp

I can only vouch for the Android version of Osmand+.

Unless Apple has made some changes (I haven't seen any) there is no way to load a route to an Iphone and open it in the app. But I'll check it out again. This stuff oughta be free anyway, right? <olfart>

God forbid someone would want to do something with the iphone they paid for not approved by Apple.

I tested further this morning using a 40+ mile GPX route with scads of turns and waypoints plus bluetooth turn-by-turn voice instructions to my Sena headset. It all worked!

Thats pretty intriguing. How would you rate the overall performance of that setup against a Garmin? You know, processor speed, screen redraws, quality of the turn-by-turn info, etc.

Smartphones have far more powerful processors, more memory and higher screen resolution than a Garmin GPS. Mine doesn't break a sweat running Osmand+. Since Osmand+ fixed the routing bugaboo I'd give it the nod over Garmin. It's still a little rough around some of the edges but has every conceivable feature and configuration option. The paid version costs $5.99 and that buys unlimited street maps, topo maps and nautical maps of the entire world plus updates forever. The curtain hasn't totally dropped on dedicated GPS's but the fat lady is singing.

One hitch I encountered is that smartphones have capacitive touch screens so they don't work with gloves. I need to get this stuff to paint on a glove finger: http://www.webbikeworld.com/r5/nanotips-review/

Also check out Thumb Dogs. They slip over finger/thumb. Www.rkaluggage.com compares all those things! Richard is a pain but does know his stuff!

Lee, I assume this all works without any celphone connection, right? Assuming that, there's nothing to stop someone from mounting a 7" tablet on the bars and running it as a GPS!

Yes, it works offline so anything with a GPS chip is fine.
