Garmin 1490LMT mount

I finally got rid of my Garmin Nuvi 40 and picked up a refurbished Garmin 1490. I did this based on the fact that Lee is currently using the 1490 and is capable of downloading routes and waypoints to his unit from MapSource and/or BaseCamp. My problem is how best to mount the 1490. I have a RAM ball mount that could be attached to the Garmin but I need the "saddle" for the Garmin unit to attach to. Haven't found one yet sooo... I thought I might try something like I saw on Lee's bike. I think it's some type of "finger" mount. Anybody have an idea of where I can find one for the 1490? Lee? On a side note, it's neat making and downloading routes! I still have quite a bit to learn.

If so, better ask him how well it works, as I had one and the range of device sizes is limited somewhat.

Also, don't you need the "saddle" or cradle in order to power it from the bike? And aren't the batteries the first thing that go out on these things?

Edit: I just saw that the 1490 uses a direct mini-USB for power that makes it easy, no cradle needed.

You could mount it like I did my radar detector, using a Ram mount covered with velcro plus the rear of the unit too. No way will it come loose.

The X-Grip mount is too small (only 3.25in width). I need a W of 3.4" min. The 1" ball rectangle would work but I'm not a big fan of Vecro if I don't have to use it. A craddle would work using the RAM ball mount but for flexability, the "finger" style could be of some use if I get a different model Garmin down the road. Lee's holder must be good if he's still using it. I think I saw it on his new bike. Gonna order the RAM Nuvi holder from Revzilla and keep looking for a good "finger" type mount.

All you need is the $10 RAM cradle for the Garmin 1490 series. Plus, whatever RAM ball and arm you want to use. The cradle: http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-garmin ... ga35u.html

Lee, thanks. I ordered the cradle already. I thought I might need something a little stronger to stop the vibrations. I guess it's not needed. I made a center ball mount bracket attached to the tank mount on my FJR. My radio is where your GPS was mounted and yes, it is a 10mm thrd.

I may be wrong but that cradle looks like it would be TOO easy to release the GPS--maybe some sort of redundant retention device should be designed. Something really high-tech--like a zip tie.

It requires an effort to remove the GPS from the cradle - it cannot simply come out on its own.

I have those same snap-in RAM cradles for my two Nuvi Garmins... agreed, it takes a healthy effort to get them out; to lose one while riding, you'd be having a bad day already at that point
