KLR650

Unread postby LeeDavis » Mon Mar 10, 2014 5:43 pm

I took the KLR apart some more to do some more stuff, more betterer - mainly so I'll have a complete baseline mileage reference for maintenance. It'll be reassembled this week and READY TO GO! Broz just got a DRZ400 and wants to play...anybody else? My last messing about on dirt roads and trails was with a Yamaha 250 Enduro if anybody can remember back that many decades. I barely can which means I have little idea WTF I''m doing. It'll be much appreciated to have anyone with skilz. Or whatever - "Ignorance is bliss" are the words I live by!

I love riding the gravel roads north of Morganton. That would be the perfect place to get your DS bikes on the gravel. You guys just wait for me ahead occasionally and that will be fine. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

I've been looking for a good KLR for running the fire roads around here. I always wanted to do Parson Branch Rd out of Cades Cove to Deals Gaps. Hard to do on a Feejer. Maybe I could teach my wife to ride - finally !

DIRT

Unread postby Bob » Mon Mar 10, 2014 10:01 pm

I don't really miss my F650GS thumper or my KLR. They were NOT a lot of fun to ride from Charlotte to where the good stuff is, plus they were a little heavier than what I wanted for the dirt. But I do miss those rides thru the forest. I just don't miss the trip to get there. I kept saying that as soon as I moved closer to the mountains I would get a lighter dirt bike and start riding again. Alas, I am still stuck down here in gridlock city.

So I picked up a lightly used DRZ400S today and am ready to RIDE!! No, nagonna ride it TO the mtns., but I do have a 2-bike Kendon trailer just rusting away in a corner of my garage. It has room for 2 DRZ's. Know anyone else in Charlotte with a DRZ? lol

Lee, get that six-fiddy back together soon dude. Marc, lotsa stuff available out there at reasonable prices. Brick, we'll be glad to wait for you at the top of Pineola. <smirk> Broz--get your head straight. Literally. Lets go get dirty. <muaha>

And to anyone else looking for something different I highly recommend it. Street = ying, dirt = yang. The ying yang of motorcycling. <bana>

Well I'm loving my DRZ but my wife is probably cursing whichever one of you turned me onto the ADV Rider forum. What I like most about it so far is you can snatch the throttle in first gear and pop a good wheelie. <squid>

I'll have the KLR finished today then do a shake down run Friday. Probably take Globe Mt Rd to Blowing Rock, the BRP to Roseboro Rd or Pineola Rd and head back on one of those. Let's get something going soon!

Check out Richland Rd., runs off 321 north-eastward about half way up the mtn. towards B-Rock. Never ridden it but heard it was neat, water crossing and all. Starts out paved and becomes Sampson RD and eventually hits the BRP.

Lee let me know I might be interested in joining you. You will have to be the guide because I'm keeping the DRZ rough w no GPS/ Radar......might not even carry my Motorola.....until I get a tank bag.

Bob are you talking about Sampson Road that goes to the BRP? It's easiest to get that off 268 onto Buffalo Cove Rd. Sampson has some tough parts to it but is great. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Yeah, I'll stay in the dirt west of 321 for this one. Sampson Rd is another of those I investigated on the FJR then thought better of. I'll definitely be checking that stuff out on the KLR as the future unfolds. Any and all road tips are appreciated.

Broz, most any time you want to get here on Friday is OK. I don't anticipate this run being a big deal - more about feeling things out.

That's good, Broz - the forecast is that it's going to be a little slow to warm up Friday morning. Cya then. Anybody else wants to give this a whirl, just show up at my place.
