Jennings Motorsports track Day

Unread postby Brick » Wed Feb 22, 2017 9:18 am

<Moved from Upcoming Events>
Well I'm riding out today. Just gonna do about 1/2 way down today and enjoy the ride.
I'm not much of a fan starting a ride in the rain but... it's raining so I'm riding.
The track day is Friday. It's a track day designed for sport touring type riders and bikes. Motojournalist Ken Condon is teaching it.

Didn't start until 11:50 this morning. It was lightly raining for the first 30 miles and the last 5 miles. Image
Tomorrow looks to be another short day. And nice weather. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Well we had a ball. Track Day was a lot of fun. Image it was 85 degrees at the track. [THUMBS UP SIGN] Image Image Image When I left on Wednesday it was lightly raining for the first 30 miles. The rest of the ride down and back was nice. I lowered the air pressure in my tires for the track and they heated up and kind of balled up on the edges. Image Don't know if the photo shows it well or not.

Brick, how much did you lower the tire pressure? Is this standard procedure for a track day? Did it seem to make a big difference in cornering grip?

Maybe I'll start doing that before I head up Old 18. <muaha>

Jennings Motorsports track Day

Well when I got there I asked a number of regular track day junkies about tire pressures. All said to run lower than I ran on the street. Some said as much as 10 lbs. I lowered them 8 lbs. Then Doug and Becky the MSTA track participants who were assisting in doing this Sport Touring Track Day. They were telling all to just run what pressures we ran on the street. But said to not worry about my lower pressures.
I'm sure it made some difference but I'm also sure it wears tires more quickly. Steve should chime in here as he has done a lot more track days than I have.
As I understand lower pressures builds up more heat makes the tire softer.

This is who was the trainer http://www.ridinginthezone.com/ also Doug and Becky FL MSTA members. Doug writes the Safety article for the MSTA's STAReview. And the run the National Honda Demo program.

Lower tire pressure increases heat and makes for a larger contact patch. I imagine the heat increases the pressure a good bit and would be curious to know hot pressure. They ran cold 30 front and 30 rear at Superbike School on Q3s. I'm told you can call the tire manufacturer and they will tell you what pressures to run for a specific tire on the track. I can't say much about anything else because that is all I have run on the track. I almost never run stock pressures on the street, but nowhere near that low.
