Thursday 10-6 to Hawg n Dawg

Unread postby Bob » Mon Oct 10, 2016 10:19 am

I met up with Lee in Marion and we then rode 80, Double Island, and 197 to Erwin Tn where we met haulinashe for lunch at the Hawg n Dawg. Haulin has a brand spanking new 2016 FJR1300 with a ton of hi-tech innovations and new 6-speed gearbox. I really like the changes Yamaha has made to this machine. So does Jeff. <grin>

After lunch we took 197, Double Island, and 226A back to the flatlands, 126 around Lake James, and Old 18. A great bunch of roads and good company too!

We ran Into this guy riding a vintage Indian 4-cyl-1943?

With Double Island's fresh pavement on the middle third and last year's repaving of the northern third, it's getting to be a grade A+ twisty road. If they do the southern third next year it will be!

I think the rider said the Indian was a 1941 model. By '43 they might have stopped production of civilian vehicles because of WWII.

No doubt, D-I is now fun once again. The lower third isn't so bad anyway, they paved the worst parts first. <rdr>

Thanks for the update on Double Island. The was probably the road most in need of repair in Yancey county for the past 10 years. I have no idea why they wouldn't resurface it unless it was because of those Dang Motorcycles hehe

Sorry I've missed ya'lls weekday rides lately. My vacation time is being used for things other than riding Grrrrr <banghd> The good news is my Mucular condition has been defined as Rheumatoid Arthritis. Not great to have, but now known can be treated with Meds. Been riding relatively pain free for 2 months now.

See ya'll soon!

That little turnout at NC-80 & BRP is about as close to a Yellow Brick Road crossroad as one could ever hope for. You can just sit there and be constantly amazed at the mystical creatures passing by. From Unicorns to Trolls, it's all there!
Everything that spells FUN, will cost a little bit more than you can afford.

FWIW, I rode all of Double Island Sunday and the last section near 19E appears to be in the process of resurfacing. Just past Upper Doe Bag (always thought that was a weird road name) there's a const sign stating Road work 4 miles. One lane was paved for 2 miles then ended and the equipment is still up there. I have to believe they'll complete the last section in the next few weeks. I was enjoying the new surface when a 10-12 point Buck halted my progress as his doe slowly sauntered across the road. I revv'ed the twin and both took off lol

Also 19E is 4 lane through Burnsville to NC80 where they installed a much needed traffic light. Riding the backroads above Burnsville is still the best way around, but when time crunched it's good to know the 4 lane is longer and the 2 to 4 lane is now isolated to NC80-Spruce Pine.

Wow--what progress! I bet they have moved to completion date up to around 2032 maybe..? <olfart>
