Fri. 2-15 Ride to Lake Lure & Beyond

Unread postby Bob » Sat Feb 16, 2013 2:40 pm

Ed, Yarbi, and I met up and took the "Lake Lure Expressway" thru greater downtown Polkville on NC182 with Yarbi leading the way. Arriving at Lake lure at 11:30, we were greeted by Doug "Zippin" Pippin (MSTA member), Otto (forgot his last name), and Joe Thomas (MSTA NC state director). And then Brick & Scott rolled in and we had a great lunch at the Lake Lure Smokehouse. Afterwards, "Zippin" (who was riding a KLR650) set a frantic pace thru "new" roads--to me anyway--plus a couple familiar ones too. After Winding around Lake Adger, we hopped on Green River Cove Rd. for a harrowing ride up the switchbacks to Saluda. Then a new/old route back down the mtn. and a trip up Skyuka Mtn. Rd. to the top of White Oak Mtn. Then a few different roads west of Saluda until it was time for Ed & I to head back eastward (Don had cut out after lunch). The weather was fantastic, although it got a little chilly up in the hills as clouds gathered late afternoon. I had a great time!!! Anybody else take any pics? <pics>

A little estate we passed on our way to Lake Lure

Some good ridin', for sure... my thanks to the route-planners for not beating the poor sportbike squid up too badly this trip.

Hey, we even did... what, a mile-and-a-half or so of dirt?

Wow! when Bob says, "Zippin" (who was riding a KLR650) set a frantic pace thru "new" roads--to me," you know he was hauling ass. <tour> Hopefully I can join you guys next time.

Glad you guys had a good ride. How many miles?

Well, like ED said, "what a difference a day makes". Anybody else's yard look like this today?

Yep, same situation here... flurries on and off earlier today, with no "stiction"- but it's pilin' up out there now.

Here's what the "Zippin" riding part looked like. Total for the day for me was around 320 miles.

Edit: Found my error and changed pics with revised route--now my miles agree with Ed's. <rdr>

With the route we typically take, I should always end up with ~15 miles more than you do.

Yeah, but with all those burn-outs I do, that will rack up a few extra miles. <fonda>

I had a ball on Friday. Rode 238 miles door to door. Too bad you guys didn't come along for the final leg it was a hoot. Along Pinnacle Mountain road.

I had ridden that a year ago with Zippin but didn't know where it was. Now this route links it all together again. This time of the year Pinnacle Mtn road had some winter "crap" on the road but it is a blast.
Scott and I just ended up taking 64 back to Morganton and I got home at like almost 6PM.
Great day of riding!

Cool- that looks like a great choice for an upcoming ride!

Got back home at a little after 6PM as it was... as soon as the daylight starts holding later I'll be up for some longer days again.

I knew from my GPS that Pinnacle Mtn. (up Cabin Creek?) was the only thing left to do from there, but it was time to make that difficult decision to head home (125 mi.). We would have been enjoying the rush hour gridlock after dark had we not.
Bill Wilson and I rode Pinnacle Mtn. a few years ago on our KLR's from the western-most tip all the way to the east. It was all gravel/dirt from the west over the top almost to Cabin Crk. Rd but its been paved over the top now. A very scenic ride. <olfart>
