July 4th Ride Morganton to the Snake

Unread postby Marc K » Fri Jul 04, 2014 3:42 pm

Met up with 007 and his IG (Imaginary Girlfriend) PirateRider Ben and my buddy Pat from SC at the Gate in Morganton. Lee and Brick stopped by before we left out. Up 181 to the BRP, 221 to Schulls Mill Rd through Valle Crucis to Mast Gap Rd, Sugar Grove Rd to Hwy 421 to the Snake. Little traffic all day. My wife jumped off at the Snake to take pics. These are PG rated - all others contain nudity ! Hey 007 and PirateRider Ben send me your emails so I can send all the pics - the Members list doesn't have the direct email. Now for the pics !

Awesome ride, all! The IG had a good time, too. Ben has gotten silly fast since the last time we rode. I could hardly keep up!

Just rolled in. Looks like fun - glad to hear you guys had a good time. I headed back home for a few minutes then up in the dirt to check out some new to me roads, Rockhouse Cr Rd and Yancey Ridge Trail. Of course, the Forest Service had both gated closed. They've also laid down a lot of gravel on all 20 miles of Maple Sally and kind of made a mess of that. Need to have a talk with them boys.

Lee - there was a KLR for sale parked out in front of Powerform in Mountain City. I'm going to try and get by and look at it. He does a lot of consignment so I'm afraid it's priced crazy.

Here's a good site for finding small to medium displacement DS bikes in the area. I used it to get my KLR. It appears to be automated and updates often. http://www.bikefinds.com/dual-sport

Marc, there's a member contact info. sheet with emails/etc at the top of the "Upcoming Day Rides" main page--it is listed as an "Announcement", which probably isn't visible if you're using Tapatalk. At least it isn't in mine. Does that help? (and you're on it! <smirk> )

It is time for that suspension upgrade, Ben! Keep that bike off the deck. That is, until you start going even faster. Then it is time to slow down, lol.

Thanks Bob. I was looking at the "members" list up on the tool bar.

It was great to see you guys again! AND to meet Angeli the no longer IG! Glad y'all had a super ride! We did too. 5 bikes 2 GS's 1 Tenere 1Tiger 800 and 1 Yamaha 225 DS bike. Maple Sally did not notice the gravel that Lee speeds of?? 90 over to Globe Rd up to Blowing Rock to A LATE lunch, 3:00pm at Woodfords for BBQ. Then 221 to Edgemont rd to ?to Jonas Ridge then down 181! We avoided Wilson Creek as it would be very crowded!
Excellent! Ride!

I am certainly considering having cogent work over my suspension in the fall. If I could get this damn money tree to grow...

Murphy Place at the bottom is all re-graveled though it gets a lot of traffic so is packed down pretty good. Most everywhere else along the way has new gravel on the steeper grades and curves where they're banked to one side. I was being flippant with my complaint because they're trying to control erosion and there's nothing else to be done for it. I might have noticed it more because I was trying to roll sorta quick and it slows me down.

That is gravel, which my bike threw at him several hundred yards back. Sticky Q3s, up to no good.
