Sunday June 22, 2014

Got up early Sunday... just one of those days. Headed to Timberwoods but on the way saw Lee and Jeff at the Marathon station fixin to start there ride.
Good turn out at Timberwoods for breakfast. Four of us left to ride to Wheels Through Time. Chris on his 2013 GS, Scott on his Tenere and Mark on an older BMW K75.
Damn it's a long way over there and it's either I-40 and Rocky Mtn Parkway or a lot longer on other roads.
Once at WTT we had a rear time. Sale Walksler's TV show, "What's in the Barn" has really opened up his access to lots and lots of more good stuff.
Then we wanted to ride this gravel road that Gary Lackey had shown us last year. It was further west on the BRP toward Cherokee. Turned onto Balsam Mtn or Heintooga road. The paved part is fantastic and about 15 miles long. The gravel road... they said was 28 miles long. It goes down to Cherokee and is super fun and quite easy. Mark on his K-75 had no problems.
By now it was after 5PM, yes we took a lot longer than we thought. So we hit the highway to get home as quickly as we could. And we mostly stayed up pretty high so it wasn't do hot.
Great day's ride!

Nice that the Balsam Mt area is open again. NPS had closed it because of budget cuts. Jeff and I did the near by crowd pleasers - 181, 221, Shulls Mill, 194, Hickory Nut Gap, 226a, 80, breakfast at the Banner Elk Cafe and still finished the ride around lunch time. The southern half of Clarks Creek Rd has new pavement and is a lot of fun. A state trooper had a family car pulled over on 226a. Seems unusual for Sunday morning so they might be patrolling it.
