Burnsville Roads

Unread postby LeeDavis » Mon Apr 28, 2014 12:05 pm

HaulinAshe and I had a great time riding the north/south twisty roads off 19E. They're mostly in good condition with a few exceptions.

The Big Rock Creek Bridge is out on 226 just south of the Fork Mt Rd intersection. We devised a detour using Bad Creek/B&B roads but B&B is gravel and iffy for big streets bikes because of some steep hairpins. https://www.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=36.055899,-82.215328&spn=0.029803,0.053988&t=m&z=15

NC-80 north of 19E still has a persistent stripe of heavy grit in the the center of the lane. Tricky having to hold inside or outside through the multi-curve parts to avoid crossing it.

With the warmer weather the tar snakes on 226a are slippery again. The perpendicular ones weren't too bad but the parallel ones were out to get us. Here's boring ass ride video though there's a perverse pleasure in seeing us try to pick lines to miss the worst parallel tar snakes in curves. Twice I mess up, the bike slips sideways and there's a faint "Oh, shit!" radio broadcast to Jeff. Forgeddaboudit downhill - braking would be scary.

226A is supposed to be in the throes of repaving right now; I need to call Gary at Switzerland inn to find out what's going on there. <pop>

There are some new large road patches that can be seen at the beginning of the video. That's all I saw different.

At 6:19 in the video, there is some repaving equipment parked on the right. The kind that scrapes up the old asphalt and lays it back down.

There were a couple Tar Anacondas that certainly made things interesting. As usual, Lee had a great route mapped and we enjoyed basking in the 80 degree bliss.
It won't be long now before it's Lee's turn to lead. Perhaps I should do the video then???
<grin>
Everything that spells FUN, will cost a little bit more than you can afford.

Hope they get it right, this time! ...whatever that patching media was (50/50 recycled snot in RTV, is my guess), it certainly took ALL of the fun out of running 226A.
