Dirt Ride 3_14

I probably shoulda stayed in bed cause I had the classic 3 bad lucks - a speeding ticket, flat tire, and dropped bike. None stopped us for more that a few minutes but jeez!

The ride was great fun, though. We zipped around on many dirt roads - Broz was especially zippy - and the bikes performed good. It was freezing ass cold in the morning so we decide to do late breakfast at Waffle House to let things warm up a bit and skip lunch. That worked, and the only coldish riding was up around Blowing Rock but we weren't in that area for long.

After heading up Globe Mt Rd we topped off the tanks at the gas station at Blowing Rock.

Here we are at the entrance to Pineola Rd.

The best road turned out to be off route. We were coming down Brown Mt Beach Rd and decide to try a forest service road - it was more gnarly!

Nice report Lee. Sorry about the drop and the ticket--those pesky Lenoir cops should lighten up a bit for the locals. I mean, how much harm can an old fart on a KLR cause anyway? <muaha>

Was that off-route road Craigs Creek by any chance? Sounds like it...runs from BMB over to 181--scenic following creek/climbs up a good bit in the middle?

Broz, you get any pics? <pics>

Edit: What about that flat?? How'd you handle that?

63 yr old guys on KLRs are a menace to society!

I'll have to go back and figure out the roads we took. Towards the end things digressed into "wherever" which turned out to be lot of fun.

I'm using Ride-On tire sealant in the tubes. It worked because after the initial leakage I pumped the tire back up and it held.

Ride-On huh? Need to check that out. Does it affect the balance noticeably at street speeds?

Will u need to replace the tube or is it considered permanent?

Or more to the point, was it a slow or sudden flat?

Ride-On also works as a balancing agent for the tire so no problem there. It lasts for several years - longer than you would keep a tube. The flat seemed to happen pretty fast though hard to know exactly.

Did you find the hole where the puncture was? Any stuff oozing out?

Didn't see anything but it was just a quick fix in the field. I'm going to remove the tire/tube and inspect here at the shop.

Speaking of scenery if Lee was a little harder on the throttle we could be having wild turkey dinner. We spooked 3 going up Globe Rd and then they tried to race Lee (I don't think they would have beat me). Not long after that we had 4 deer cross in front of us. I was enjoying the scenery, just at a rapid rate.

Forgot to ask--how were the road surfaces? Dry--damp--dusty--muddy....?

Ironically, the only bad surface was 221 west of Blowing Rock - you know, the good part. I've never seen more salt and grit applied to a road. The BRP there was closed.
