Tires again... Oct 2016

On the ride home yesterday Lee and I stopped for a cool drink. And while sitting there the talk turned to tires, my tires in particular. Before my trip to Vermont for MSTA's STAR and on to Nova Scotia I mounted a set of Avon Trailrunner tires I think they are a 90/10 tire. On the way home just north of Boston the rear tire was gone. So we found a dealer in Boston that had a tire that fit and they would put it on now. That was a Continental Conti Motion $120 for the tire but $82.50 to change the tire on the bike. They wouldn't allow me to take the tire off and remount in the parking lot. So I only got 4,945 miles out of the rear Avon Trailrunner.
So now that ContiMotion is gone too.
That's 2,812 miles on the ContiMotion. Lee says he loves ContiMotion tires that they are soft and stick but he runs them off in 1,800 miles (rear) and gets them for $90 and like me changes his own. Also I am only running 36 lbs in the rear.
Another side note the front Avon is still on and really has a little life left and has 7,857 miles on it. Hmmm perhaps I can run two rear tires to one front.

Actually yes I was complaining that it was sliding when I got on the gas coming out of a corner. Remember me whining going up NC80?

Was anything wrong with the Avon Trailrunner you replaced? If I could get 5k miles on a tire I liked I'd declare victory.

Yeah, it was worn out but did you like the tire? IMO, given the way we ride 5k is good mileage.

But that was all road miles to the rally wasn't it?

Yes it's definitely not the same. Road miles loaded down with luggage is not the same as we ride here! But after seeing the numbers I would consider it again.

Dad put those A40's on the Storm and I've ripped it around some. I'm pleased with them. Which is saying something since I run super sport tires on my bikes.
I felt the A40 was predictable and had good grip for what the weestrom is capable of doing.

I've heard from a friend that the new Scorpion Trail 2 is an awesome tire with more sport bike like grip and feel. He runs them on a Tiger Explorer.

Installed new rear brake pads as the original were wore out at 47,302 miles. I don't think that is bad. I like to run stock = usually organic pass as I don't want to increase rear braking just front braking with a sintered pad.
Also mounted the front Bridgestone Adventure A40 tire.
So I'm ready to ride and have big hope for these Bridgestone A40 tires. [FLUSHED FACE][THUMBS UP SIGN]

$120 for the rear only? They were selling sets for that price a little while ago. There are better choices than conti motions in wear, performance and price. I destroyed a rear motion in about 500 miles on a bike that wasn't mine so I wasn't riding all that hard. They stuck well enough but the cheap price wasn't worth changing tires every week. Life is too short to ride crappy tires. At the least, they are cheap insurance for keeping the rubber side down for those of us who can't slow down.

007 apparently you didn't read my entire post... I got a Conti Motion in Boston, MA while traveling on the way back from MSTA's STAR in Vermont and then on up to Quebec City and across and around Nova Scotia. When you are passing through while traveling you don't always have a choice. You kind of get what they have in stock. The biggest thing is finding a shop willing to pull a technician off what he/she is working on to change your tire instead of making you wait. I had a dealer in, I think it was Texas that I would have to wait two days because he was going to service his local customers first and I the traveler could just wait. I rode on to the next town and found a shop with a better tire at a better price and they allowed me to remove the rear tire from my bike in the parking lot and they put the tire on right then! The biggest thing is finding a shop willing to pull a technician off what he/she is working on to change your tire instead of making you wait.

You must have forgot to tell them you're SPECIAL!

Which dealer wouldn't help you? I will try to remember to not visit them. Seems to me like they should take some time to help a rider in need. I would have done the same had it been the only option, Brick. That begs the question why the dealer only had that tire option. I have more choices in my own basement, including S21s, T30 EVOs, M7RRs, and a lone Q3! Probably none in your size, though.

I've found a number of dealers in my travels over the years that were not helpful. I ride an Adventure motorcycle not one of the most popular motorcycles so stocking tires for it was not a priority. Same when I owned and rode a Sport Touring bike like the FJR. The old mom and pop bike shops stocked Knobbies for dirt bikes.

Maybe add a spare rear tire to your packing list? If you already had it mounted and balanced on a spare rim, you would be all set!
