"NEW"? Garmin GPS

Unread postby Bob » Thu Oct 06, 2016 7:08 pm

I think I am hallucinating. 6 years after discontinuing the best motorcycle GPS ever made, its back--and I still have mine (GPSmap 478). So they DO listen?? Crazy.

Edit: Wonder If its just another Nuvi or Zumo in the old style case? If it doesn't actually have the old-style features it won't be worth 10 cents.

Garmin had a family of GPSMAP units, 176, 276, 376, 478. They all looked identical but the higher numbers had a few more features. What they all had in common was hard buttons to push, waterproof, rugged, flawless routing, audio output jack, and granular control over all the features. Around 2010 they decided nobody cares about hard buttons and a unit that actually did what people wanted, so everything went to touch screens and dumbed-down interfaces and a different routing system that only worked if you rode the route from start to finish. There was a huge backlash and it only took them 6 years to realize this. <dope>

It would be quit a thing for Garmin to give up and abandon the newer multi-waypoint "trips" (that everybody hates). If ever there was an example of fixing something that wasn't broke, Garmin changing their algorithm from "routes" to "trips" has to be near the top of the list.

Yep and whether they did remains to be seen. I am unable to find an online owners manual to peruse, but maybe it will appear soon. If its a rebadged Nuvi, then FTFF.

Hmm... This is a nice feature but it's usually an added monthly expence. Is this a subscription thing too?

On my 478 it is an XM subscription to get weather--like $30/month. It WAS nice to have radar overlaid over your route in the summer months, but MyRadar on my Iphone seems to work pretty nicely for free!

My 478 still works great--the only reason I'm not currently using it is the BMW NAV5 has the integration with the left hand grip. If it didn't have that, it wouldn't be worth 2 cents.

Agreed- I can run live radar on the phone easily enough... 'twould be nice to have it all-in-one, but it's tough to beat "free" on a phone app.

Don't you have to have wifi to get live radar on your phone?

Not if you have a data plan which I'm sure you do. It works just like any other app using your data connection. Check Myradar in app store.
