BMW is recalling nearly 49,000 motorcycles in the U.S. and Canada because flanges that hold the rear wheel can crack if bolts are too tight.

The recall covers multiple models including certain 2005-2010 R1200GS and R1200RT motorcycles, as well as the 2006-2010 R1200GS Adventure and the 2007-2010 R1200R, 2007 R1200S and K1200R Sport. Also included are the 2005-2007 R1200ST, the 2008-2009 HP2 Megamoto, the 2006 HP2 Enduro, the 2008-2010 HP2 Sport, and the 2005-2008 K1200S, 2006-2008 K1200R and K1200GT. The recall also covers the 2009-2011 K1300S, 2010-2011 K1300R, and the 2009-2010 K1300GT.

Been known for a long time, they finally got pressured by NHTSB to do something. Its actually the mounts that hold the brake disk that usually crack, still a bad scene though. Not caused at all by torquing the bolts too much, but by the fact the original hub was cast aluminum instead of steel. BMW can't admit they made a mistake so they always try and pin the cause on improper maintenance. Mine has the newer steel wheel, no cracks.

Glad they finally did this. Both of my Rs were fine, but my inspections of the final drive for known issues of excessive play, cracks, leaks, etc., became a paranoid relationship rather than just part of a prudent pre ride check. At the other end of the spectrum my Guzzi Stelvio was so heavy it was like cast iron with lug bolts easily twice the size of the BMW hardware.

I love the BMW "quality" as designed and even after years of use how well components stand up overall, but then there are the few Achilles Heal items that seem to follow regardless the model's generation. The minimal additional attention to enjoy better quality control and/or slight spec modification to a part seems to be forbidden as their admitting an upgrade is required is worse than owner frustration and damage to the Brands reputation. And I eventually will buy another one.

Yamaha is about to announce a recall for many 2015 FJ09, FZ09, FZ6, R6 and Tenere, including my new bike. There's a part in the transmission with a sharp edge that can break. I haven't heard of anyone having the problem so it sounds like they're being proactive.

I think Yamaha has always been pretty proactive in recalls, even when safety isn't the issue. I remember the recall on my 06 FJR for the instrument cluster.
BMW, on the other hand, will wait until someone is killed before doing anything.
