Considering a BMW 1200GS

Unread postby tireatr » Sun Sep 28, 2014 7:48 pm

Got a bead on 2007 GS1200 Adventure. What should I know about these bikes as far as reliability. As stated this is the adventure model ; this one has 19k miles. I know and trust the owner. He did say the fuel pump recall had Been done.

Ken, they are pretty reliable. I can't tell you about any one common thing to watch out for, and 19K miles is quite low. If you hang around the advrider.com forums long enough you will see some folks worrying about final drives a good bit. Anecdotally, it appears that GSA's that have been ridden very hard, heavily loaded, and thru deep stream crossings *may* have a higher/earlier incidence of final drive failures due to corrosion of the big bearing, and *maybe failures of driveshaft u-joints. But they are not what I'd call common. If the price is right, valves adjusted and all fluids changed per schedules, 19K is awfully low miles. Go for it!
(If it were me, I would try to find a low mileage 2010 with the newer camhead engine but it will of course cost you more.)

Thanks Bob. The one I am considering is sub $10k. I have been considering an adv tourer for some time. This could be the one.

You will love the bike. <icool> Any hard luggage included? If not, I'd shoot for $8500.
