Garmin still supporting Mapsource?

Unread postby Bob » Sun Aug 31, 2014 1:26 pm

Been a lot of talk that Garmin no longer supports Mapsource--lots of it from Garmin themselves a few years ago when they were trying to move everyone over to Basecrap (lol). They even hid the download link under several obscure layers of menus. Well, I still use Mapsource because it *works* and is much more intuitive than Basecrap (IMHO). But--I was having issues with it occasionally crashing right in the middle of planning a route. So I cliked the link to send the Mapsource error msg. to Garmin, figuring I'd never hear a word back from them. But in a couple days, I got this email below. I was amazed by the length and detail of the instructions, esp. for a product they no longer support. In fact, if you clik this link in the email ( http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp ) you will find that Mapsource is once again listed as a "Mapping Program". The term "not supported" is nowhere to be found, as it used to be. I would say they finally woke up--to some degree--and are in fact once again supporting Mapsource.

Dear Robert Beale,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The CPP or HPP error in MapSource/Garmin Applications typically indicates a corruption in the installation. To correct the following errors, uninstall MapSource/Garmin Applications and remove all registry keys.

DSK MEDIARESOLVER.HPP
DSK IMAGEHEADER
DSK SIGNATURE.CPP

With any error message, updating the MapSource/Garmin Applications and the Garmin device unit's software (firmware) to the current version will resolve some errors. If the error remains, continue with the uninstall and reinstall of the Garmin Applications.

The Garmin Applications can be downloaded from the following link: http://www8.garmin.com/support/mappingsw.jsp
Training Center: http://www8.garmin.com/support/collecti ... 9-99999-04
The device's system software can be updated with:
WebUpdater: http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupda ... nstall.jsp
myDashboard: https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/dashboard.htm
The MPL errors in MapSource typically indicate that the application cannot find the needed map images for a particular mapping product. First, try a repair of the maps if using Windows Vista / 7 or 8. If that does not work, continue with the uninstall of MapSource/Garmin Applications and remove all registry keys.

Map Repair Instructions:

Open Control Panel
Open Programs and Features in icon view (Uninstall a program in category view)
Click the Garmin mapping installed
Click the Repair option (The repair option is next to the uninstall option across the top. Not all products will have the option to repair.)
Open the Garmin Application after the repair has finished. If it does not error out then there is no need to continue with the uninstall/reinstall. Otherwise, continue with the uninstall.
The WIN and GLO errors in MapSource/Garmin Applications typically indicate the user who installed the application does not have full administrative rights or a security program was preventing the install from writing all needed files. To correct this error in Windows Vista / 7 or 8, the program can be set to run as administrator. If this does not work or the computer is a Windows XP, continue with the uninstall.

Windows Vista/7 - Run as Administrator

Right-click on the Garmin application icon (MapSource, Training Center, BaseCamp, etc.)
Click Properties
Click on the Compatibility tab
Check the box Run as Administrator
Click OK
Open the Garmin application
Windows 8 - Run As Administrator

Modern UI or default screen:

Right-click on an empty space of the Start menu
Click on "All apps" in the bottom right
Right-click on the Garmin Application and choose "Run as administrator" in the lower options bar
Desktop:

Bring up the Charms menu by hovering the cursor in the upper or lower right corner
Click on Search
Locate the Application in the APPS and right-click
Left-click on Run as administrator in the lower options bar
If the error continues, proceed with the uninstall

OK, so is it true that I can go to Mapsource and download the program w/o having a Garmin device that supports downloading the files. I mean, can I just make routes and print them?

Lotta info here, Bob. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, just download the file and install it. But then you need to transfer your mapping database to the computer too.

OR--just download the OSM free mapping and use it instead. There's a link here somewhere--I think Lee posted it.

To clarify--use the OSM mapping along WITH Mapsource--not as an alternative.

Edit: be sure and clik the BIG blue download button on Garmin's site, not the small link for the "Topo Patch"--its kind of confusing the way the page is organized.
