Old fart medical question: shoulder replacement?

Unread postby flip » Fri Jan 20, 2023 1:19 am

Okay, so I know this group is unrivaled in knowledge and experience on a few topics: motorcycles, cars, music, medical ailments and women. I’ll keep the discussion on medical: have any of you guys had shoulder replacement surgery? I thought I tore something in my left shoulder and bicep. A shot of cortisone Friday put out the fire in my shoulder but not my bicep…maybe I’ve finally learned to multitask and I screwed up more than one thing. Anyway, doc said shoulder was very inflamed with lots of arthritis and the cartilage is more or less gone. He said shoulder replacement is in my future, whenever I want to do it. I’d had surgery on that shoulder decades ago and had some nerve damage from it. I knew it wasn’t in factory new condition but I didn’t know it was shot. I honestly didn’t even know that shoulder replacement was a thing. I’d love to hear from any of you with any experience on this.

That would be the last thing I'd do at this point. Mild exercise and wait 8 weeks for the tear to heal and then see how it goes. If the doc was an ortho, then he's gonna recommend surgery. Thats what they do. <grin>

And no, I have not had any shoulder surgery. Take it easy. <olfart>

I will add this though since it might be relevant--a few years back I tore my right distal bicep when I jerked the bike off the centerstand. A distinct POP, followed by major bruising. I lost a lot of strength in that arm for certain movements. But it did heal up after a while.

This was the inside of my right elbow:

An 80 year old , active neighbor of mine in Little Switzerland had both shoulders replaced in 2021-2022. He said it was hard to learn how to use the other arm for some tasks, but overall he is glad he regained his strength and ROM. You guys may have heard I just had my right rotator cuff surgically repaired and it went well according to the Dr. They had to anchor the torn ligaments to the bone as well as clean up a lot of bone spurs that had formed over the years. I hope to be back to riding in 12 weeks, then do the other side in late fall 2023.

Anyone who I know that has ever had knee, hip, shoulder joint replacement all said they wish they had not waited so long. Rehab was not bad and their quality of life improved dramatically.

I’ve not had any of those surgeries but the way my knees and hips hurt I am going to go to a Dr to find out what’s going on in there!
