Drone Video

Unread postby LeeDavis » Thu May 27, 2021 3:55 pm

I purchase a Skydio 2 drone who's party trick is tracking and following a target while also avoiding obstacles. In addition to its 4K video camera it has 6 more 4K cameras, top/bottom/front/rear/left/right, that it uses to monitor it's position in space relative to other objects.

Here's a short 45 second clip of it following Greg and me up 105. You'll see the drone quickly dodge around tree limbs a couple of times. https://youtu.be/8jd27k4wSEg

Here's longer video that's a work-in-progress of my local MTB trail. I parked the drone to stationary positions tracking me.

Lee, thats pretty darn cool. How long will it fly before it gets tired and takes a nap in the road, and how do you know when that happens?

Skydio list battery life at 23 minutes and I'd guess that's an average depending on how hard the drone is working.

Skydio has an app that shows me what the drone camera sees plus speed, battery level, other stuff and that can also manually steer the drone. In addtion, there's a two stick type controller if one wants to do more precise manual flight. Also, a beacon device with some basic manual steering function but who's main task is sending the drone it's gps postion in real time so even if the drone loses sight tracking it'll follow the gps coordinates of the beacon.

I think Skydio says 36mph.

Sounds very complex. Amazing what drones have become.

Very cool. How does it adjust height for tree canopy?

I can set a flight height though it will alter that to avoid obstacles. Here's a 1 minute experiment clip from not long after I got the drone to see if Skydio would track me from a position well above the tree tops and if it really would follow the GPS beacon I carried when occasionally losing visual tracking. I also set Skydio to "follow" me from the front. https://youtu.be/bKx45G3gfmg
