Another Trail Bike

Unread postby LeeDavis » Tue Mar 12, 2019 1:29 pm

There are lots of trails where my KTM isn't allowed but mountain bikes are so I ordered an eMTB (electric mountain bike). It should deliver some time next month. This'll be big fun! <bana>

It's got all the bells and whistles. Figured might as well go for it.

OK so now I'm reading about eMTB's, something I didn't know existed until about 4 hours ago. I might want one too. <grin>

For starters you'll likely encounter the same problem I did. Local area bike shops sell the same brand electric as their non-electric which are European, like Trek and Specialized. Those electrics are built to comply with Euro regulations which require much lower power and speed limitations than what we have in the US. For example, Euro electrics are limited to 250w motors where US motors can be 750w - a big deal! Euro spec bikes can't have throttles - pedal assist only...and their motors cut off with pedal assist greater than 15.5mph...bleh.

For US spec bikes the only option I found is online vendors.

Somehow that doesn't surprise me one bit about the euro specs. Those pussy-fied effers don't want anyone to have ANY fun. <banghd>

Are these US bikes legal to ride on city streets as well as NF roads/etc?

Bikes with up to 750w motors are legal on US roads as unlicensed vehicles. My bike has a 1000w Bafang Ultra Max motor and I promise to use it offroad only. <grin>
