E-glide ST electric bicycle, my new "car"

Unread postby 007 » Wed Jun 21, 2017 8:47 am

Since sitting around is a huge risk factor for adverse cardiovascular events and I do way too much of it, I have decided to buy an electric bike for commuting purposes (2 miles one way) and grocery shopping (1-4 miles depending on where I am going). I don't plan on riding busy streets like some because riding a motorcycle has shown me cars shouldn't be trusted. At a 20mph top speed (electric only) and acceleration that rivals most cars, I will stand a chance on suburban 25mph streets and probably seek out some of the local greenways. The combination of technology advancement lowering prices and desire to own one finally intersected this past Friday. I can't wait to get it in the mail this upcoming Friday and have the opportunity to spend even more time on 2 wheels! May the ghost of Nicky Hayden watch over me!

The inspiration was multifactorial, but all of the reasons came from my inner drive for cutting waste and improving efficiency. All of which are summarized by Mr. Money Mustache:

It has absurdly quick turn in and flick rate. The wheelbase is sort of long for a bicycle but incredibly short for a motorcycle, so it hardly needs to lean to make a turn. Slowing down is really not necessary, although you know how I ride a motorcycle so just picture that on a bicycle going 25mph around a corner. I would drag a knee, but I need to look decent when I get to work.

The maiden E-bike commute wasn't looking good about mid-day with a huge storm, which was particularly impressive from the 9th tower of the hospital, but it left a cool ride home with damp streets. This thing is sweet. I took the long way home and the odometer shows 12 miles now. Gonna need a battery tender for the car, lol.

I asked them to hold it at the Fed Ex store because I wouldn't be home to sign for it and wouldn't want it on the doorstep anyways. The Focus was just big enough to fit the huge box in the rear with the seats folded down, which I took as a sign to keep it and trade in for a VW GTI. Heck I may buy a beater truck at this rate, or go without a car now that Uber will help me out when I need it. Amazon's purchase of Whole Foods may have reduced needs for 4 wheel transportation even more - I expect some sort of delivery service to roll out soon! Sam's already does the shopping for me after I pick out items online. It will be fun picking it up on the E-bike trailer.
